Gabriel Jamie

Tour Leader & Cape Town Pelagics Guide
Dr Gabriel Jamie is a research scientist based at the FitzPatrick Institute of African Ornithology, University of Cape Town, South Africa and at the University of Cambridge in UK. He became interested in birds as at a very young age, first in Cape Town and then in United Kingdom. This has resulted in a life-long avian obsession that has led him to study birds and their ecosystems in many places around the world. In Africa, this includes over ten years of fieldwork throughout Zambia as well as research and birding expeditions in Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria, Ghana, Mozambique, Malawi, Namibia, South Africa and Madagascar.
Gabriel’s research focuses on the origin and evolution of new bird species with a particular emphasis on brood-parasitic birds and their hosts. This has led him to spend many years in the field studying complex and challenging groups such as the indigobirds and whydahs (Viduidae), the waxbills and firefinches (Estrildidae) and the cisticolas (Cisticolidae). Gabriel is an avid eBird user and is a country reviewer for Zambia and northern Mozambique. He has uploaded over 12,000 images and almost 2,000 sound recordings to the Macaulay Library through eBird including many of poorly known and rarely documented species:https://media.ebird.org/catalog?userId=USER532807&view=grid&sort=obs_date_desc
